FAQ

Q

How do I get in touch about distribution or retail of The Machinist book and jewellery?

A

Please send all inquiries to hupyickworkshop@gmail.com

Q

Where can I purchase the book?

A

The Machinist book is mainly retailed through this online shop and the machinist's workshop located at 84 Horne Road in Jalan Besar.

Q

Can we visit the machinist's atelier?

A

The machinist Mr Yee opens his workshop Hup Yick Engineering Works on weekdays from 10am to 5pm. Sometimes he closes for lunch or goes out to purchase material, so a phone call before your visit may be helpful. When he is not busy at work (he doesn't like to be disturbed when he has a task at hand), he is always up for a conversation over milo which he loves to brew for visitors.

Q

How can I arrange a guided tour for my students?

A

One of the reason we felt compelled to embark on this project was our role as educators. The Machinist is about creating awareness of the cultural legacies of Singapore—the repair industries, the tacit knowledge of skilled artisans and the living rituals of a maker.

We have led some guided tours of the workshops featured in the book for students, educators and creatives. This is planned on a seasonal basis and depends on our schedule and the size of the group. If you are interested to arrange a tour for your students, please write to us at hupyickworkshop@gmail.com.
